Fan Experience
A giant talking Oak Tree in Staples Center
Immersive Fan Hub
Gen City Labs partnered with StubHub to turn a standard booth at Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) into an interactive Fan Experience. The space combined a responsive “Talking Oak” centerpiece, a live Instagram visualizer, and a commemorative ticket generator. As a result, fans stayed longer, created content, and shared their moments online.
Interactive Features
The Talking Oak reacted to proximity and motion, growing more animated as guests approached. Meanwhile, the Instagram visualizer pulled approved posts into a dynamic mosaic so fans could see themselves on a live display. In addition, the ticket generator captured photos and produced custom keepsakes that tied each visit to the event. For a similar personalized takeaway, see our Warriors Ticket Configurator.
Reliable Performance
Event venues can have unpredictable connectivity, so we built a local queue and sync system to keep everything smooth even when Wi-Fi dipped. Because of this approach, content moderation, image pulls, and print jobs continued without hiccups. Finally, the experience scaled to high volumes on game nights and during special events. Process
Early on we were faced with many wifi / connectivity issues due to the infrastructure of the space. We worked through these issues by instituting a local server with a queuing mechanism for all HTTP calls to the cloud. Our Instagram wall was powered by our own custom Instagram scraper which allowed us to set hashtags, Instagram accounts, and block offensive content on the fly. The interactive ticket oak experience used an Infrared camera and a little bit of computer vision to detect when a guest would walk in front of the screen, as well as their distance to the screen which determined which videos played, this helped to increase engagement. The commemorative ticket experience was heavily powered by our CMS which allowed our client to set ticket backgrounds, schedule events, and of course measure the engagement. For other ROI we installed anonymous demographic cameras on a few sides of the kiosk to measure dwell time, impressions, and other factors important for engagement.
